  74. Recently there was a post on rec.radio.amateur.misc about gun control
  75. which spawned a whole slew of posts supporting the concept.  While my
  76. views on gun control are fairly well known in some newsgroups, this
  77. post isn't about this.  It is about the threat to amateur radio.  It
  78. is very easy to take gun control arguments and apply them equally well
  79. to ham radio.  In fact, some of the attacks I mention below have
  80. already been tried.  Some of these attacks are blatently false but are
  81. seen in the media nonetheless.  Remember, gun control arguments are
  82. also based upon twisting the facts.
  83.  
  84. 1) Nobody _needs_ amateur radio so we should feel free to ban it.
  85.    In an emergency the government can take care of all emergency
  86.    communication.  Individuals should not be trusted with dangerous
  87.    radio equipment which can electrocute children.
  88.  
  89. 2) With the advent of cellular phones, amateur radio is outdated; it
  90.    no longer needs the spectrum it requires.  Amateur radio should be
  91.    phased out and the spectrum sold to companies.  The revenue gained
  92.    from selling this spectrum can be used to bolster FEMA and other
  93.    government based emergency services.
  94.  
  95. 3) The only purpose for ham radio is by criminals who scan the
  96.    airwaves to keep track of police broadcasts.
  97.  
  98. 4) Amateur radio emits radio waves which have been shown to cause
  99.    cancer so we should prohibit amateur radio as a public safety
  100.    concern.
  101.  
  102. 5) Amateur radio antennas are liable to fall and injure someone.
  103.  
  104. 6) Use CCR's to limit antennas.  They are ugly and ruin the view for
  105.    all neighbors.  CCR's are private contracts so are not subject to 
  106.    the limitations that laws are.

  120. I am a new ham and just a few days from buying my first HT, probably
  121. the YAESU FT-530.  I've been monitoring 2m repeaters on my scanner
  122. lately to try to learn the ropes.  I am a little concerned that the
  123. 5 watt output running an HT with a mag-mount antenna may not be very
  124. good coverage.  In the New Ham Companion a friend brought back from
  125. Dayton, there is a brief mention of the possibility of using some sort
  126. of amplifier in this configuration, but they offer no specifics, brands,
  127. prices, etc. about doing it.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who
  128. has experience or opinions.  Thanks,

  142. I've been interested for a while in time and frequency measurement, and have 
  143. been collecting bits and pieces of equipment.
  144.  
  145. At the Hamvention last weekend, I finally found my dream:  a rubidium 
  146. standard.  It's a little Efraton thing (part number 100323-101 for what that's 
  147. worth) and it seems to work.
  148.  
  149. But one problem is that it only has a single 10MHz output, and my other 
  150. equipment all wants either 1MHz or 100kHz inputs.  So, I need to design some 
  151. divider and distribution stuff -- and I'm clueless about how to minimize phase 
  152. shift and jitter, and how pure a sinewave output I need to shoot for (or will 
  153. my other equipment be happy with squarewave input?).
  154.  
  155. To get to the point, I'd be interested in corresponding with anyone out 
  156. there who's knowledgeable about frequency standard/measurement systems, so I 
  157. can get this thing lashed up properly.

  288. I have an Icom W2A in nice condition I'd like to sell. It has the BP84
  289. battery pack which comes with it standard and also has the origninal
  290. box, manual and sales receipt. I also have a number of optional
  291. accessories that go with it for the $400 price.

  307. The W2A is a twin band ultra small HT covering the 2Meter and 440MHz
  308. ham bands. It has CTCSS and PL and DTMF capability included stock. Truly
  309. a deluxe HT.

  311. It also makes a fine wideband scanner and is capable of receiving cellular 
  312. and even has a 30khz step size etc. If anyone is interested in more info,
  313. I can email a few files describing features such as cross band repeat,
  314. how to do the extended transmit mod (I have not done this), and a 
  315. few other tidbits that were posted in the 1991, 1992 timeframe.

  426.    I've noticed that the recent amateur radio licenses come in two parts:  
  427. the traditional wallet document, and one that can be framed to be hung in  
  428. the shack.  I was last issued a license in 1990 that was printed with an  
  429. impact printer, and it's a little hard to read.  It appears that the new  
  430. licenses are laser printed.  
  431.  
  432.    Question: Can I ask the FCC for the new license?  I'd like to get the  
  433. part you can frame.  (Somehow I feel the answer is going to be `no.')
